Aggie is 80, overweight, rebellious, and contrary. Her daughter June is strict, burdened, and resentful. When Aggie’s body begins to betray her in particularly difficult ways, June becomes even more overwhelmed and bitter – and begins to plot a route to her own freedom.
The two are coming to the end of a lifetime of being at odds, but what sort of end will it be? The prospect of a nursing home looms in Aggie’s future and bolsters June’s hopes, but their fierce, sharp-tongued dispute relies for possible resolution on the arrival of Frances, June’s daughter and Aggie’s beloved granddaughter.
While they struggle for accommodation, or at least a ceasefire, they wait for Frances, Duet for Three’s unknown quantity, raised by the two women, and in their minds, the deciding vote on the future.
